Tired of GORP? Try this variation for your next trail mix. Chocolate Lover’s Trail Mix tastes great and features lots of good things for quick energy on the trail. It is my favorite trail treat for colder weather hiking.

2/3 cup dried apricots
2/3 cup dried cranberries
2/3 cup dried blueberries
2/3 cup almonds
2/3 cup walnuts
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup dark chocolate chips

Mix all of the ingredients in a large bowl. Transfer to a freezer bag before hitting the trail.

Try adding a bit of dried coconut if your a fan of the palmy fruit.

A Hiking Adventure in the Rocky Mountains

January 15th, 2008

Let’s go hiking! I will be leading a week long hike in the Rocky Mountains this fall. Golden Leaves and Mountain Mornings: Hiking the Rockies, CO, a Sierra Club outing, provides a wonderful opportunity for us to enjoy the Colorado Rockies in Autumn. We will spend each day exploring the mountains. No need for a tent because each night we’ll stay at a cozy lodge in warm beds with down comforters.

I have been involved in the Sierra Club national outings program as a leader for several years. Last year, our group backpacked in Colorado and the year before that we were camping in Montana.

So get you hiking boots ready and register now as these trips can fill quickly.

Alcohol Stoves, a Better Way to Cook?

January 1st, 2008

I really enjoy backpacking. I don’t like carrying heavy cooking gear.

I own several camping stoves, everything from a giant Coleman beast that I use for car camping to my very small MSR canister model. The MSR has served me well on many week-long trips into the mountains but I always end up coming home with partially empty fuel canisters. And next time I am packing to leave on a trip I have to decide whether I should take all new canisters or take some new and some mostly full ones. I usually end up taking new canisters. Quite a collection of these canisters have taken up residence in my garage.

But is there is a better way? Alcohol stoves are light weight, use easy-to-find fuel and can be very inexpensive. Zen and the Art of the Alcohol Stove contains an impressive collection of information about the use, construction and advantages of these stoves. They list the advantages as: Read the rest of this entry »

Lost in the Woods

Lost

No one begins a wilderness adventure expecting to get lost. Any yet, every year, a significant number of people get lost or stranded in our nation’s woods. Every hiker that enters the wilderness must know the answer to the question, “What if I get lost?”

Search and rescue professionals recommend the following tips for someone who is lost.

  • Stop walking!
  • Draw attention to yourself safely. Blow your whistle or yell back if you hear your name called. Make yourself and your camp visible from the air.
  • Keep calm. Use the survival gear in your Ten Essentials* kit to get comfortable while you wait for rescue. Stay warm, dry and visible.

Note: Rescue personnel will normally suspend search efforts during the night. But stay put. The search will resume again after the sun rises.

Unbelievably Simple Hamburger Stew

December 11th, 2007

This is a quick recipe and it is very easy to make.

I usually brown the meat and then pour off some of the fat before I cook the onions and garlic. I then add a little tomato paste to this dish. The tomato flavor adds a richness and warm color to the stew. This stew is especially good on chilly days.

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs. ground chuck
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • couple of cloves of garlic, chopped (or can use powder)
  • 3 cans mixed vegetables
  • 2 cans sliced potatoes
  • salt & pepper to taste

How to prepare:
Brown the burger with the onion & garlic. Add the canned veggies and potatoes, with juice. Boil until hot. A TOTAL hit!!

Can be served with crackers or a roll of french bread that’s been foiled (heavy duty of course) and heated.
