A Bit of Green

A tiny log-sitting frog with boggely eyes and skinny legs once lamented, “It’s not easy being green”. Have you ever felt like that little green frog? Wondered what you could do that would matter? Sometimes it seems that caring for the planet is an unmanageable job that is best addressed by elected officials and major corporations. But helping the environment is something you can do all by yourself. Here are several simple things that you can do to make a difference. So get up off that log, look in the mirror and celebrate that little bit of green.

• Recycle your paper, glass, plastics, cans, newspapers and motor oil. And please buy recycled products.

• Use rechargeable batteries. One rechargeable battery can replace hundreds of single-use batteries.

• Plant a tree or two. Beautify your home, attract wildlife, and lower your heating and cooling bills.

• Replace your incandescent bulbs with an ENERGY STAR qualified compact florescent bulbs and use 2/3 less energy.

• Keep your tires properly inflated to save gas. A single, under inflated tire increases fuel consumption measurably.

• Buy locally grown food and products whenever possible. Locally grown means fresher food and lower transportation costs. It also helps your local economy and supports the family farm.
